Here’s a simple planting and care guide for Non-Stop Begonias:
Planting
- Choose the Right Location: Non-Stop Begonias thrive in partial shade to full shade, though they can tolerate some sun, especially in cooler climates. Aim for a location that provides 4–6 hours of indirect sunlight or light morning sun.
- Soil Preparation: These begonias prefer well-draining, fertile soil. If planting in containers, use a high-quality, well-draining potting mix. For garden beds, amend the soil with compost to improve drainage and fertility.
- Planting Depth: When planting Non-Stop Begonias, plant them at the same depth as they were in the pot. Gently loosen the root ball before planting and cover with soil.
- Spacing: Space plants about 10–12 inches apart to allow room for their compact, upright growth habit.
Watering
- Consistent Moisture: Water regularly to keep the soil moist but not soggy. Begonias are sensitive to overwatering, so ensure proper drainage to avoid root rot.
- Watering Frequency: Water when the top of the soil feels dry. In containers, the soil may dry out faster, so check frequently, especially during hot weather.
Fertilizing
- Balanced Fertilizer: Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer (e.g., 20-20-20) every 4–6 weeks during the growing season to encourage strong growth and continuous blooms.
- Avoid Over-Fertilizing: Too much fertilizer can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowers. Stick to the recommended dosage.
Pruning and Deadheading
- Deadheading: Remove spent blooms regularly to encourage new flowers and maintain a neat appearance. Snip off the dead flowers at the base of the stem to keep the plant looking fresh.
- Pruning: Lightly trim back any leggy or overgrown stems to maintain the plant’s compact shape. This also helps with airflow, preventing fungal diseases.
Pests and Diseases
- Pests: Non-Stop Begonias are generally pest-resistant but may occasionally attract aphids, mealybugs, or spider mites. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary.
- Fungal Diseases: Avoid overhead watering and ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases such as powdery mildew or root rot. If you notice signs of disease, remove affected leaves immediately.
Winter Care
- Cold Sensitivity: Non-Stop Begonias are not frost-hardy. In colder climates, bring them indoors before the first frost or treat them as annuals.
- Indoor Care: If kept indoors, place them near a bright window with indirect sunlight and reduce watering in the winter months. They may go dormant but should resume growing and blooming in spring.
