Santana Geraniums are an interspecific hybrid variety, a cross between zonal and ivy geraniums. They are known for their heat tolerance, vibrant blooms, and more compact growth habit. Santana geraniums typically have a bushier, semi-spreading habit and are ideal for containers, hanging baskets, and garden beds. They come in a range of colors and are especially appreciated for their ability to thrive in hot conditions.

On the other hand, Ivy Geraniums (Pelargonium peltatum) are characterized by their trailing habit, making them a popular choice for hanging baskets and window boxes. They have more flexible stems that cascade down, with flowers that tend to be more delicate in appearance compared to the more compact Santana series.

So, while both types belong to the same genus (Pelargonium), Santana geraniums are more compact and bush-like, while ivy geraniums are trailing and more vine-like.

Sunlight

Santana Geraniums need at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily to thrive and produce vibrant blooms. Place them in a sunny spot, either outdoors or near a south-facing window indoors.

Soil

These geraniums prefer well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–6.4). Use a light, soilless potting mix to avoid waterlogging and root rot.

Watering

Water regularly, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Keep the soil moist but not soggy. In hot summer months, they may need more frequent watering.

Temperature

Ideal temperatures are between 65°F–75°F (18°C–24°C). They are heat-tolerant but should be protected from frost, as they are not frost-hardy.

Fertilizing

Fertilize every 4–6 weeks with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer, avoiding high phosphorus formulas. A balanced 20-10-20 mix works best.

Pruning & Deadheading

Remove spent flowers regularly (deadheading) to promote new blooms. Prune leggy growth to maintain a compact, bushy shape.

Pests & Diseases

While generally pest-resistant, watch for aphids, spider mites, or fungal issues like powdery mildew. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or fungicide if necessary.

Winter Care

Bring Santana Geraniums indoors before the first frost. If grown indoors, place them in a sunny, cool location to maintain health through the winter months.
